QBTS September Meeting - Challenge Quilts

There haven't been any blogs for awhile as I had to leave the beach house because of impending hurricane Matthew.  I went to my daughter's house in Charlotte intending to come back in just a few days.  I did try!  The roads between Charlotte and the coast were badly flooded necessitating me having to turn back to Charlotte for  a few more days.  The main road between here and there is still flooded and many of the side roads were also under water.  I ended up having to drive an extra two hours and head way north and then back south.  I waited until the road closings and detours were all online so instead of four days in Charlotte, I was there for about ten days.  My daughter had to be in Wilmington this weekend so she flew from Charlotte to Wilmington and back to make sure she could get here.  The flooding is incredible.  We had virtually no effect here at the beach thankfully.


It must have been  a really hot summer here in NC as there were more quilts from this modestly sized guild than from my very large guild in Rochester!!!  

The following series of quilts were made as part of a summer challenge.  Each person received a charm pack of fabrics called Brushstrokes (kind of a solid substitute) and the theme was "my favorite color is".  This quilt won for best original design and I really did like it -- both the composition and the machine quilting which really enhanced it.

This won for the best use of the fabrics.

This won for best use of embellishments (all the appliqued lilacs).  

These next three were all jurors' choices.

Our speaker for the evening was Janice Pope who designs quilts.  

This was a full sized quilt with the mini version of it below.

The mini version of the above quilt.  All these quilts were very simple and made good use of the fabrics.

There were lots and lots of quilts for show and tell but people moved quickly as usual so I didn't get as many pictures as I would have liked.

No blog would be complete without at least one bird picture.  Here is an ibis in a tree down by Ft. Fisher.  This was an unusual place to see ibis although you do see them like this out on the small islands.

You can see that there were a number of ibis in this dead tree!!
