What a treat to visit the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden located in Wilmington right near Independence Mall. I decided to visit on my way home from taking pictures of the quilts for the quilt show. I have no idea what the individual names of all the different plants were but there were many many varieties of pitcher plants.
One of my main reasons for visiting was to see the Venus Fly Traps in bloom. They only grow naturally within about a 75 mile radius of Wilmington NC and I had tried numerous times to spot them at Carolina Beach State Park to no avail! They are very close to the ground and hard to see without their beautiful white blooms which you can see in the picture.
This is one of the Fly Traps so you can see the anatomy of it! Last year thieves came in and stole hundreds of them from the gardens but they have since been replaced for the most part.
The remaining pictures are just closeups of some of the various varieties of plant! It was a very hot day!!
Just giving you a view of the layout of the quilt show with many of the smaller quilts shown. You can see they had lots of room.
The opening night featured the teachers showing examples of some of the things they would be doing in class. The next two examples are the front and reverse of art quilts by Barbara Shapel. This is all thread painting just once but looking really good on front and back!
These next two were by Flavin Glover and featured diamond log cabins. She had many more examples and they were all very nice!

Another surprise was seeing Judy Simmons there (although she does live in NC!). I feature her blog over on the sidebar. I took my very first marbling class from her and got the bug!
This was Mickey Depre whose name and work I had seen before.
These were two of Mickey's quilts. She also was doing a lot with hexagons.
This was also by Mickey Depre and I just loved it. Note the hexagon blocks!!
We also had Paula Nadelstern and Georgia Bonesteel (another NC native) as well as several other fairly well known quilters!
I haven't seen much in the way of birds lately (pretty busy with the quilt show photography) but did catch a couple of dragonflies down at the aquarium. I believe this is one of the blue darners but my books are all packed away!

The show was really beautifully laid out which is always a challenge.
This was The Viewer's Choice winner as well as one of the first prize winners. Inside the little nine-patches are prints of postage stamps. It is called "Waiting for the Mail" by Mary Wirchansky. It also had transferred pictures all over the back and was hand quilted!
This quilts was just stunning with wonderful machine quilting. It is actually a raffle quilt for the Sandhill Quilters Guild! I believe it won a Best of Show also. It was a very large quilt!
This one is called "Here There be Dragons" by Bobby Fitzsimmons! I believe it won a first prize. I did love the way this fabric looked as a kalaidoscope!
Of course I always like One Block Wonders and this one is called "Out of this World" b y Carolyn Baker. Nice composition!
I believe this was a prize winner as well. It was huge and beautiful use of color. It is called "Dragonflies in Flight" by Lois Griffith although quilted by someone else.
This and many of the following quilts were not given ribbons in the show which I found quite surprising (mine didn't get any ribbons either). The above quilt "Curling Colors" by Margaret Applegate was beautifully done with the tubes all stuffed and standing out. Can't imagine why the judges didn't give an award for this one.
This one was called "Geese in the Parking Lot" by Phyllis Tarrant. Also can't imagine why it didn't get any ribbons as it is a visually stunning quilt and was beautifully made!
"Batik New York Beauty" by Mary Steimle. Don't know whether it had ribbons or not.
"Sealife" by Chris Balchunas .
Can't remember whether this had ribbons or not but a fun quilt!

Rhapsody in Sequin Bay" by Pamela Burke. This was another original design beauty that had no ribbons!
"Rainbow Abstract II" by Karen Preston. Don't remember whether it had ribbons or not. It was a nice improvisational piece and my guess is that it didn't.
You will note that I didn't include a lot of the prize winners as they were nice quilts but in many cases would not have been my choices! After having that nice lecture on NQA judging, I had expected complexity to count for a little more! I had to almost laugh at the comments on my quilts (calling one of the serendipity quilts a "stack and whack" when it is far far more complex than that ).
I was shocked that four days before the big quilt show that there would actually be quilts shown at our monthly guild meeting, especially since the meeting was on a holiday! This is another quilt by Betty V. who has to be the most prolific quilter in the guild. Just stunning!!
This guild is very active in a number of community service activities including Neonatal Quilts, Habitat for Humanity quilts and Quilts of Valor for injured serviceman. I counted about eight Neonatal quilts and 16 Quilts of Valor shown during the meeting!! How appropriate for Memorial Day. Hands up for the ladies of Quilters by the Sea Guild!

The rest of the quilts were just some of the Quilts of Valor that were shown. I still haven't gotten the ladies to hold them up for too long but they were better when showing off these quilts!!
These are just some closeups showing bits of just a few of the beautiful quilts that will be in the show. Enjoy!! I took over 200 pictures of the quilts today which will be on a cd that hopefully will get done by the show next week.
